Heading into the 2013 football season, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier made it clear: Christian Ponder will be his starting quarterback when training camp opens in July.
“He’s our starter,” Frazier told reporters in his final news conference of the season, adding that Ponder’s play was a key to the Vikings getting into the playoffs.
“The way he played down the stretch — he was great,” Frazier said. “We’re pleased with the progress he made. We’re excited about his development.”
As for Saturday’s playoff loss to the Packers, Frazier again defended his game plan, despite the struggles of backup quarterback Joe Webb.
“Tough day for Joe,” Frazier said. “We really put together a game plan that went to his strengths. We had a mix. So, no. No regrets. It was the right approach. He’s shown he can function in our offense.
“There were things he did, and did well (in practice). So, it was a tall task for him. He fought, but we just weren’t able to get over the hump.”
Frazier also said that it was too soon to say if the Vikings will sign a more-experienced backup for next year, but Webb will be competing for that position.

On Percy Harvin, who sat out the last seven games of the season with an ankle injury:
“Percy rooted for his teammates throughout this process. I don’t know if there is anything that needs to be done (with Harvin’s attitude). He exists peacefully now.”
On his contract situation:
“Eventually we’ll talk. I’m not worried about it. Things will work out just fine.”
