You’ll never believe it, but former Vikings tackle Matt Kalil is out with a groin injury for his new team, the Carolina Panthers.
Panthers head coach Ron Rivera told the Charlotte Observer he doesn’t believe the injury is related from the hip surgery he had last fall. There’s no timetable for his return.
Kalil played in just two games during his final season with the Vikings, while making $11 million last year.
After four inconsistent seasons in Minnesota, he cashed in this past offseason, signing a five-year, $55.5 million contract. USA Today called it one of the worst signings of free agency.
After inking his lucrative deal, Kalil told Sports Illustrated in May, “This is my last contract.” Judging by his recent play and his injury history he’s probably right.
His brother, Ryan Kalil, is the starting center for the Panthers and is a five-time Pro Bowler.
Funny enough, Kalil’s replacement in Minnesota, Riley Rieff – who signed a five-year deal worth $58.75 million in the offseason – is also injured and there’s no timetable for his return either.
