The San Francisco 49ers have a quarterback controversy on their hands, and former Viking Christian Ponder may find himself under center as the team’s starter.
According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, Ponder has support from inside the San Francisco locker room.
“Ponder is the best option for quarterback on the roster,” said a locker-room source.
Blaine Gabbert, who opened the season as the team’s starting quarterback, has struggled this season. Colin Kaepernick has started 47 games for San Francisco in his six-year career and has served as the back up this season.
Following the 49ers loss to the Cardinals on Thursday, head coach Chip Kelley said Kapernick could start next Sunday, but he’s also endured multiple off-season surgeries and may not be healthy enough to start.
Ponder hasn’t appeared in a regular season game since 2014. The former first-round pick was a late addition to the 49ers roster in training camp and played well enough to make the team.
The 49ers have lost four straight games and are 1-4 on the season. They play the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 16.
