Andre Mcdonald was one of the most highly thought of recruits in the country when he entered the University of Minnesota in 2012.
The Rivals Top 100 incoming freshman brought size, athleticism, and what many believed to be an instant impact to Jerry Kill’s program.
After playing eight largely ineffectual games for Minnesota his freshman season, he was suspended for the Gophers appearance in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
This past season, Mcdonald was suspended for the year by Kill for what was termed a “violation of team policy.”
Today, a little more light has been shed on what the suspension was for and where Mcdonald plans on continuing his football career.
According to the Minnesota Daily, who spoke with Mcdonald, he will be playing his college football at Division III Wisconsin-River Falls next year.
Mcdonald said the choice of River Falls had to do with having friends at the school, specifically linebacker Cory Clark, who reached out to him after his 2013 suspension.
Mcdonald told the Daily that his suspensions had to do with marijuana, adding “it was always drug-related.”
The former Hopkins High School superstar wideout hasn’t enrolled in classes since the fall of 2012, as he went to treatment at Hazelden in the spring of 2013 and left the state to live with a friend in Miami after his suspension for the 2013 season.
Once a top-3 recruit in the state according to Rivals, Mcdonald will now play for a Division III squad that went 0-10 last year, losing to Minnesota sides St. Johns and St. Thomas, while being held winless in the WIAC.
