Former Minnesota Gophers running back Marion Barber was detained by police in his hometown of Mansfield, Texas, Sunday night.
The 31-year-old Barber was a standout for the Gophers from 2001-2004. He was taken to a hospital for mental observation, according to the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram.
Barber played for both the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears in the NFL from 2005-2011.
He rushed for 4,780 yards and scored 53 touchdowns in his career. At the University of Minnesota he rushed for 3,276 yards and 35 touchdowns.
Prior to his time with the Gophers, Barber was a standout at Wayzata High School.
“This was not an arrest, but he may have hand cuffs on him if he was placed in a patrol car,” Mansfield police spokesman, officer Thad Penkala, told the Star-Telegram.
According to The Associated Press, Barber will not face charges. Penkala added that police wouldn’t know if Barber was still in the hospital and wouldn’t be notified.
According to TMZ, Barber was taken into custody at his home, but the incident in question occurred at a nearby church.
