Fox Sports North reports that several thousand hard core Gopher football fans spent part of their Saturday at the TCF Bank Stadium in an open-to-the-public, 1 ½-hour practice session to preview the Minnesota squad.
The Pioneer Press reports that all eyes were on the quarterbacks. Sophomore starter Philip Nelson is regarded as the best passer of the bunch. The Star Tribune reported that Nelson reaffirmed his status as the team’s starter, going 6-for-6 for 53 yards and a touchdown on the first two drives against the first-team defense.
Freshmen Mitch Leidner, Chris Streveler and Donovahn Jones also saw action; Jones and Streveler are both members of Jerry Kill’s 2013 recruiting class. The Pioneer Press opined that each quarterback on roster fits Kill’s system.
A handful of key players were not on the field because of injuries. Receiver Jamel Harbison (tight hamstring), safety Brock Vereen (knee), cornerback Derrick Wells (shoulder) and offensive lineman Ed Olson (flu) all missed the afternoon workout, but none have any serious ailments, Kill said
Minnesota’s season opener against UNLV is on Aug. 29.
