State Senator Sean Nienow wants plans to construct the new Vikings stadium put on hold until there is a better way to pay for it, according to the Star Tribune.
Electronic pulltabs were supposed to fund the state’s $384 million contribution for the stadium. However, the expectation of e-pulltabs generating $35 million a year was vastly overrated, as only $1.7 million was generated in the first year.
The failure forced the state to quickly come up with new fundraising methods, including electronic bingo.
With groundbreaking for the new stadium set for this fall, Sen. Nienow is leading new legislation to delay the sale of stadium bonds until the state can raise enough money to make annual payments for the stadium.
