Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer confirms Bobby Felder is definitely in the race to unseat Marcus Sherels as the Vikings’ punt returner.
“He’s getting a shot,” Priefer said of Felder. “He got a shot the other night and he’ll get another shot on Sunday (against San Francisco).”
Felder had a big 37-yard return last Friday night in the preseason game against Buffalo.
He does a good job of catching it,” Priefer said. “And he broke a couple tackles the other night. So he’s doing what we’re asking him to do. That’s what we’re looking for, and hopefully, that will keep going for him.”
As for Sherels, Priefer says the Rochester native won’t shirk from the challenge.
“Marcus knows,” he said. “He knows he has to win the job. So, he always welcomes that challenge and he’s got to prove himself again.”
Although Sherels is the incumbent, Felder might have the edge because he’s already considered a better cornerback. As VikingsAge.com puts it, every roster spot is precious, and the Vikings clearly want their punt return man to have value at another position.
