Kyle Farmer has been placed on the 10-day injured list after being hit in the face by a Lucas Giolito fastball on Wednesday.
The Twins say the move is for a “facial laceration,” which corresponds with the team’s initial report that Farmer had surgery on his lower lip and bottom four teeth at Regions Hospital in St. Paul to suture lacerations to his lip and “reset his bottom teeth.”
Farmer was drilled by the fastball in the fourth inning. He was face down on the ground for a while before walking off under his own power while holding a towel over his face.
Replacing Farmer on the roster is outfielder Kyle Garlick, who was called up from Triple-A St. Paul.
Minnesota also transferred outfielder Gilberto Celestino to the 60-day injured list.
The Twins and Yankees begin a four-game series Thursday at Yankee Stadium.
