Carlos Gomez is quickly becoming one of the most exciting players in Major League Baseball. Justin Morneau, in the big picture, is still a shadow of his former self, but the pair of former Minnesota Twins are off to great starts.
Morneau was a superstar with the Twins from 2006-2009, winning the American League MVP award in 2006. Concussions then plagued Morneau, and after fading down the stretch last season when he was traded to the Pirates, Morneau’s career looked all but over.
He signed with the Colorado Rockies, and he’s completely smashed expectations through 18 games. Morneau is crushing the ball. He’s batting .345 with four home runs and 15 RBI, five of which came on Sunday, according to the Denver Post.
Coors Field might be the perfect fit for Morneau (and any other slugger in MLB history, apparently). Sporting News says the 32-year-old is hitting .367 in eight games at the Rockies’ home ballpark.

Meanwhile, Carlos Gomez, Sports Illustrated says, got a little too confident on Sunday when he admired a ball he thought was a home run but wound up hitting the wall in center field. He still tripled on the play, but his unwarranted admiration of a ball that didn’t leave the yard got under the skin of Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole. The two exchanged words and the result was fist-a-cuffs and a benches-clearing brawl. Video of the melee is available below or at MLB.com.
Gomez and Pirates reserve Travis Snider were the only players ejected. Gomez is hitting .312 with five home runs and 12 RBI.
