Amir Coffey wasn’t selected in the NBA Draft, but he’s been given an opportunity to play in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Coffey, a former Hopkins and Gophers standout, announced on Twitter that he’s joined the Clippers, with the Star Tribune’s Marcus Fuller reporting that Coffey has signed a two-way contract and will get his first action with the Clippers in the Las Vegas Summer League.
The 6-foot-8 guard averaged 16.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists during his junior season with the Gophers.
Coffey played small forward his first two seasons with the Gophers before taking over at point guard this past season, and in doing so led the Gophers to the NCAA Tournament for the third time under head coach Richard Pitino.
It’s unclear what position the Clippers view him playing, but if he can play either guard position he’ll have the height to match up with pretty much anyone in the NBA.
Coffey kept his name in the NBA Draft pool even though he had one year of eligibility remaining at the University of Minnesota.
It’s clear that Coffey will need to improve his ball-handling and 3-point shooting if he wants to stick in the NBA.
Fellow ex-Gopher, Jordan Murphy, has signed a contract to play for the Wolves during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Murphy was out of eligibility at the U of M.
