ESPN has published a report on 25 athletes whose potential was unfulfilled due to injuries, early retirement or simple not living up to the hype.
The report features athletes like Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson and Sandy Koufax. Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame outfielder Kirby Puckett is included.
According to the report, if Puckett would’ve played six more seasons, projections say he would’ve surpassed 3,000 hits, and 1,500 RBIs. If he had those six seasons under his belt, his projected 3,009 hits would’ve been 28th all-time; a projected 1,493 RBIs would’ve ranked him 55th all-time.
Puckett finished his major league career with 2,304 hits (152nd all-time) and 1,085 RBIs (214th all-time) but was still a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection in 2001.
