Ervin Santana was filthy again for the Twins on Tuesday. The right hander tossed six shutout innings against the Oakland Athletics allowing just three hits and struck out seven batters.
Santana entered Tuesday’s start with a Major League leading 0.77 ERA. After his stellar performance, he lowered it to 0.66. He also leads the league in WHIP.
According to Elias statistics, Santana became the first pitcher since 1893 to begin a season with six straight starts allowing no more than one run and four hits. Opponents are hitting a measly .120 against him.
Mark Simon of ESPN.com said the Twins’ ace is an early candidate for the Cy Young Award.
This year isn’t an outlier, either. Last season Santana had a 2.41 ERA over his last 18 starts. Since July 1 of 2016, no other pitcher has a better ERA than Santana.
