The Minnesota Gophers have won their fourth straight game. Minnesota scored early and often in their 24-10 win over Penn State, Saturday afternoon at TCF Bank Stadium. All of the points for both teams were scored in the first half.
It’s the first time that Minnesota has won four straight Big Ten games since 1973.
David Cobb had another big afternoon for the Gophers. He finished with 139 yards on the ground. For Cobb it was his fourth straight 100 yard rushing game. He is just shy of 1,000 yards on the season and should surpass that milestone in a couple of weeks against Wisconsin.
Gopher quarterback Philip Nelson also had a big day. He threw for 186 yards and a touchdown. Nelson also ran for a touchdown and another 40 yards on the ground.
Leading 17-10 with just under four minutes to play in the half, Nelson orchestrated a key 11 play 74 yard drive, that was capped off when he connected with Maxx Williams with 17-seconds left. It was their second touchdown connection in as many games.
The Gopher defense played well, holding Christian Hackenberg to 164 yards passing and without a touchdown. The Star Tribune reports the defense helped to seal the win by recovering a Hackenberg fumble at the Gopher one yard line with 6:40 to play.
The Gophers are 8-2 on the season with the victory. It’s the first time since 2003 that Minnesota has won eight games in a season. It also brings the Governor’s Victory Bell back to Minnesota for the first time since 2004.
Good news for streaking University of Minnesota. The Gophers have now won four straight Big Ten games for first time since 1973.
