With the Twins and Rockies game getting rained out on Wednesday, manager Paul Molitor and his staff will have to figure out a few holes in their starting rotation going forward.
Ervin Santana and Jose Berrios will start games one and two of a split doubleheader Thursday. After that, things get messy. Here’s the projected rotation for the next five games.
- Thursday vs. Colorado: Santana and Berrios
- Friday vs. Kansas City: Santiago
- Saturday vs. Kansas City: TBA
- Sunday vs. Kansas City: Hughes
- Monday at Baltimore: TBA
With two openings from now until Monday, the Twins have to decide whether swingman Steven Wilk can make a spot start, or if they’ll have to recall two starters from Triple-A Rochester.
On Tuesday, Adalberto Mejia was pulled from his start in Rochester because he was, “in the mix to make a start,” Molitor said. But he still hasn’t been called up to the majors.
Minnesota could also opt for Kyle Gibson, who was sent down after a rough start to the season. However, Molitor said they wanted to give him, “the opportunity to work things out” and didn’t want to necessarily recall him right away.
The third option would be recalling Nick Tepesh, who made one start for the Twins earlier this month.
Even with the chaos in the rotation, it’s pretty remarkable that the Twins are still sitting in first place in the AL Central.
First pitch for game one on Thursday is at 12:10 p.m., while game two will start at 6:10 p.m.
