Kevin O’Connell sat down at a round table with reporters at the NFL owners meetings on Tuesday morning and one could argue that he slightly tipped his hand about Minnesota’s draft plans.
Asked if he thinks the Vikings need to be comfortable with multiple quarterbacks if they trade up in the draft, the third-year head coach said it’ll be important not to spread themselves too thin and that their thorough evaluations are ongoing. Then he said this…
“When that process is over, whether we’ve had a chance to move up or not already, or we’re still in the process of trying to do that, or maybe we love where we’re at as far as how we see the board, I think the key is the information and building some relationships with these guys,” O’Connell said.
The key words he used are “already” and “still.” Did he let it slip that the Vikings are currently trying to move into the top five of the draft? It wouldn’t be shocking if they are considering they have a long-term need at quarterback and have two first-round picks (Nos. 11 and 23) to wheel and deal in a strong QB class.
“We’re excited about multiple opportunities and I just think it happens to be a kind of a draft we’re pretty excited about as far as the depth of how the top of the quarterback situation looks, so pretty exciting times,” O’Connell added.
If they are trying to move up, who are they targeting? With Caleb Williams undoubtedly going to the Bears with the No. 1 pick, the odds favor Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels or J.J. McCarthy as Minnesota’s target.
