Another busy night between the pipes for Devan Dubnyk resulted in 52 saves and a loss.
The Wild goalie was mostly fantastic despite giving up a handful of goals in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, but the defense in front of him had a hard time keeping the undefeated ‘Canes at bay, surrendering 20 shots on goal in the first period, 16 in the second period and another 28 combined in the third period and overtime.
Charlie Coyle’s power-play goal at 16:09 of the first period tied the game 1-1 and was Minnesota’s first goal on the power play this season, having been 0-for-7 with the man advantage the previous three games.
Trailing 2-1 in the third period, Jared Spurgeon scored to tie it early in the third and Jason Zucker ripped home another power-play goal – the 100th goal of his career – to put the Wild on top 3-2 with just under 15 minutes.
Carolina made it 3-3 with 10:38 to play on a goal by Justin Faulk.
Mikael Granlund then gave Minnesota a 4-3 lead with 4:13 to play, but Justin Williams found the back of the net for the game-tying goal with 1:08 remaining.
Sebastian Aho won it or the Hurricanes at the 2:57 mark of overtime, sending a wrist shot through the legs of Ryan Suter and past Dubnyk for his second goal of the game.
Carolina improves to 4-0-1 on the season and the Wild are now 1-1-2.
Minnesota is off Sunday and then plays at Nashville on Monday and at home against Arizona on Tuesday.
