A couple of players the Twins weren’t counting on at the start of the season helped them stomp the Tigers, 9-3 at Target Field Monday night. Sam Deduno improved to 4-0 after pitching seven strong innings, and Darin Mastroianni came up big with three hits, one a solo home run and a great diving catch late in the game.
Ryan Doumit also homered for the Twins — his 14th of the season. It was a three-run shot in the seventh inning.
The Twins piled up 18 hits as a team. Joe Mauer, Jamey Carroll and Doumit joined Mastroianni with three hits apiece.
Mastroianni started in the place of Denard Span, who is day-to-day with a sore shoulder.
