NBA.com is reporting that Flip Saunders will be the next president of basketball operations of the Minnesota Timberwolves, replacing David Kahn.
Steve Aschburner reports that Saunders has “been negotiating a contract that, with option years, could run through the 2017-18 season and could be worth more than $9 million over the full five years.”
In a text message to the Star Tribune, Kahn said he knows “speculation about our jobs is a part of this business.” He also said he and owner Glen Taylor “will meet at an appropriate time to discuss my contractual status.”
In Aschburner’s report, Saunders neither confirms or denies the report, only saying that the rumor is “the same speculation that was out there last month.”
Star Tribune Timberwolves writer Jerry Zgoda hasn’t confirmed the report, but also writes that he has no reason to doubt that it’s a done deal: “Given Asch’s history with Flip, Taylor and the Wolves for more than a decade as the Strib’s beat writer and given NBA.com’s obvious ties to the league, no reason to believe it’s not true.”
