Dalvin and James Cook might be the Florida football version of what Minnesota has in basketball brothers Tyus and Tre Jones.
Tyus Jones, a point guard for the Timberwolves, was the Final Four MVP at Duke before one-and-done’ing his way to the NBA. Tre Jones is on the rise and by the time it’s all said and done he could be just as good or better than his older brother.
The Cook brothers have a similar story. Dalvin was a 5-star recruit and Mr. Football winner in Florida before becoming Florida State’s all-time leading rusher. The Vikings picked him 41st overall in last week’s NFL Draft.
James Cook is a sophomore at Miami Central and has already committed to Florida State after he graduates high school in 2018.
James might be more explosive than Dalvin – and that’s saying a lot. He’s ranked the second- or- third-best running back in the country in the Class of 2018 by Rivals, 247 Sports and ESPN. Dalvin was ranked second or third by all three in 2013, too.
“It’s actually similar,” Dalvin said when comparing his game to James’ in an interview with Campus Insiders last October. “As far as the level he’s on right now, he’s a little ahead of where I was at that age.”
The wildest part of the story is that ex-Gophers football coach Tim Brewster recruited the Cook brothers to Florida State.
Look at what Brewster said about Dalvin when he was recruiting him.
“I just think he is absolutely special. I wouldn’t take another back in the country over Dalvin Cook,” Brewster told SB Nation. “He’s got size, he’s got speed, he’s got explosiveness, he’s one of the most natural runners. I had three years with Ladainian Tomlinson, and I think he has a lot of the same skills as Ladainian. I think he has more top end speed than Ladainian. Ladainian was a little bit bigger, but not much. I think that Dalvin Cook is very, very quickly going to make his mark on college football. Hard nosed, tough kid, smart … extremely smart, football makes sense to him.”
