Mike Modano, the last superstar to skate for the North Stars before their abrupt move to Dallas, will have his No. 9 jersey retired by the franchise.
According to the Stars’ front office, the ceremony will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2014, when the Minnesota Wild travel to Dallas for a regular season game.
Modano’s sweater will be the fourth to be retired by the franchise. Others include Neal Broten (No. 7), Bill Goldsworthy (No. 8) and Bill Masterton (No. 19).
Modano played 21 seasons in the NHL, and is the American record holder in goals scored (561) and overall points (1,374).
The Stars also unveiled a new jersey Tuesday. It features a “D” over the star on the front of the sweater, which is now dubbed “victory green.”
The shade of green is much closer to jerseys worn by the North Stars in the early 90s. In recent years, the team had shifted toward a base of black and white.
Modano, now a franchise consultant for the Stars, tells Yahoo!Sports: “It’s a good color. No one else has it. That’s the way it was with the North Stars. When you see it, you know it’s us.”
