The NFL’s upcoming free-agent class of quarterbacks lost a ton of value when the Chicago Bears announced a new seven-year contract extension for Jay Cutler on Thursday.
According to NFL.com, Cutler’s contract with worth a whopping $126 million, $54 million of which is guaranteed.
Cutler finished the 2013 season with 19 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. Although he finished with a career high 89.2 passer rating, he was limited to just 11 games because of groin and ankle injuries.
Cutler acknowledged that the money is great, but Chicago is also on the right track to becoming a title contender, according to the Chicago Tribune.
“We reached the amount of money that we’re going to be taken care of – Whether it’s $15 million or it’s $22 million, it’s hard to spend all that in your lifetime.”
This isn’t good news for the Vikings for a couple of reasons. First, it eliminates any chance the Vikings had of signing Cutler via free agency. Secondly, Cutler is 6-2 with 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions against the Vikings since signing with Chicago in 2009.
