Liam Hendriks’ time with the Minnesota Twins has come to an end.
Hendriks was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs, the team announced Friday, via ESPN.
The 24-year-old right-hander was named the Twins’ top minor league pitcher of the year in 2011, but he hasn’t seen the same success at the major league level.
His big league numbers are an unflattering 2-13 with a 6.o6 ERA.
Hendriks had been floating around on waivers since the Twins designated him for release or assignment after they signed free-agent starter Phil Hughes, 1500 ESPN reported.
Comcast Sportsnet in Chicago says this move is another “change of scenery” move the Cubs are hoping pays off.
The Cubs took a chance by signing ex-Twins starter Scott Baker during the 2012 offseason, but an arm injury kept Baker out the first five months of the 2013 season. In three starts he allowed six runs in a combined 15 innings.
In related news, former Twins slugger Justin Morneau finally agreed to a two-year, $12.5 million deal with the Colorado Rockies. The move had been expected for weeks.
Morneau wants to wear No. 33 to honor fellow Canadian and former Rockies star Larry Walker, according to the Denver Post.
