Former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen has agreed to sign with the Dallas Cowboys according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Although he’s been a fixture of the Vikings defense since being selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement after the 32-year old opted out of his contract back in March and even posted a goodbye to the franchise on his Instagram account.
Despite head coach Mike Zimmer hinting at bringing Griffen back as soon as late July, the reality was the Vikings cap situation, which has them roughly $10 million under the cap, wasn’t going to allow that to happen.
As recently as last week, a report from KSTP’s Darren Wolfson showed that the Vikings had made an offer and a counteroffer for Griffen to return, but the two sides couldn’t come to terms on an agreement.
Griffen ranks fourth all-time in Vikings history in sacks since they became an official stat in 1982, but Minnesota will now turn to Ifeadi Odenigbo to start opposite of Danielle Hunter.
