It almost never happens.
The Minnesota Wild have a snowball’s chance in hell to come back from a 3-0 series deficit against the St. Louis Blues. Winning a best-of-seven series after trailing 3-0 has happened a whopping four times in NHL history, according to Hockey Reference.
The first time it happened was 75 years ago when the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs came all the way back to beat the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Final.
In 1975, the Islanders did it against the Penguins. Then there was a 35-year wait before it happened again in 2010 with the Flyers stunning the Bruins in the conference semifinals.
Then it happened again in 2014 when the Kings shocked the Sharks.
“After the type of year we had, this is definitely hard to imagine right now,” Wild center Eric Staal said Sunday, via NHL.com. “We’ve got to find a way to win one, to do our best in Game 4.”
These epic comebacks are about as predictable as a a big earthquake. We know the big one is coming. We just don’t know when.
Game 4 is Wednesday night in St. Louis.
