Gophers blast Spartans to open B1G with victory

The Minnesota Gophers opened their Big Ten hockey season with a 5-0 victory over Michigan State on Friday night.
FOX Sports notes the victory ends a stretch of four losses in five games for the Gophers.
Minnesota goaltender Adam Wilcox held the Spartans scoreless. He stopped all 24 shots he faced to keep the Spartans off the scoreboard.
Mike Reilly led the Gophers with a goal and two assists. Travis Boyd added a goal and an assist.
Conner Reilly, Kyle Rau and Sam Warning also scored for the Gophers.
Minnesota (9-4) completes their weekend series with the Spartans tomorrow afternoon.
Alaska picks up overtime victory in Mankato
Alaska picked up a big WCHA win over Minnesota State University Friday night, beating the Mavericks 5-4 in overtime.
Tyler Morley and Austin Vieth each scored a pair of goals to lead the Nanooks. Vieth had the game-winner with the overtime goal at the 2:59 mark.
The Nanooks pressured the Mavericks throughout the game, getting after the rebounds and chasing down the loose pucks.
“Give them credit,” MSU caoch Mike Hastings told the Mankato Free Press. “Their push and their staying after it was rewarded tonight.”
Brad McClure tied it up at four late in the third. McClure’s goal capped off a four-goal third period with both the Mavericks and Nanooks netting a pair.
Bryce Gervais had a goal and an assist in the loss for MSU.
The two teams will continue their series on Saturday.
Minnesota Duluth at Colorado College
The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs picked up a 3-2 overtime win over Colorado College on Friday night at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.
Kyle Osterberg beat Colorado College goaltender Chase Perry in the extra ice time to give the Bulldogs the victory.
Osterberg’s goal completed a rally for the Bulldogs, who came back from a 2-0 deficit to get the victory.
UMD’s Alex Iafallo tied the game at two at the 17:07 mark of the third period to even the score up.
The two teams continue their series on Saturday.
