Wisconsin 4, Gophers 3
The Gopher hockey team rallied late, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped the series opener to the Wisconsin Badgers 4-3 Friday night at Mariucci Arena.
Grant Besse scored a pair of goals to lead Wisconsin and Tim Davison added a pair of assists.
Third period goals from Vinni Lettieri and Tommy Novak allowed the Gophers to cut the Wisconsin lead to one, but Minnesota couldn’t get any closer.
Lettieri led the Gophers with a goal and an assist, but it wasn’t enough.
The series continues Saturday night.

Three unanswered goals in the third period helped the University of Minnesota Duluth rally to beat Miami (OH) 5-4 in Game 1 of the NCHC playoff series Friday.
Adam Johnson, Neal Pionk and Carson Soucy all lit the lamp in the third period to help bring the Bulldogs back for the win.
Willie Corrin and Tony Cameranesi each had a pair of assists in the UMD win.
The playoff series continues on Saturday in Duluth.
St. Cloud State 4, Western Michigan 3 ot
Patrick Newell’s goal at the 16:31 mark of overtime lifted St. Cloud State to a 4-3 overtime victory over Western Michigan Friday in Game 1 of their NCHC playoff series.
Jimmy Murray added a goal and a pair of assists to lead the Huskies.
Charlie Lindgren stopped 27 shots in net for the Huskies.
Game 2 of the series is Saturday in St. Cloud.

Brad McClure had three points (1 goal, 2 assists) and the Mavericks scored three power play goals to beat Lake Superior State 5-2 Friday in the first game of their WCHA playoff series.
The Mavericks controlled the ice, outshooting Lake Superior State 41-17 on the night.
Game 2 of the series is Saturday in Mankato.
Bemidji State 3, Bowling Green State University 1
Bemidji State took Game 1 of its WCHA playoff series against Bowling Green State 3-1 Friday night in Bowling Green, Ohio.
The Beavers scored on the power play, even-strength and short-handed goals to post their first postseason victory since the 2010-11 season.
Kyle Bauman, Cory Ward and John Parker netted the Beaver goals. Bemidji State goaltender Michael Bitzer stopped 24 shots in net to secure the victory for the Beavers.
Game 2 is Saturday night in Bowling Green.
