Don Lucia will have to wait until next week to try and pass Doug Woog’s all-time career wins record at the University of Minnesota. That’s because the Gophers men’s hockey team fell to Michigan State 4-2 at Mariucci Arena Friday night.
That leaves Lucia and Woog tied with 390 career victories behind the Gopher bench.
Kyle Rau scored both Minnesota goals in the loss. Adam Wilcox also stopped 30 shots for Minnesota.
Lucia will get another chance to try and pass Woog when the Gophers play at Ohio State next Friday.
Mavericks pick up shootout win over Bulldogs
A pair of shootout goals was enough for Nebraska-Omaha to pick up the shootout victory over Minnesota Duluth, even though the game goes in the books as a 1-1 tie.
Two goals, less than a minute-and-a-half apart in the third period is all the teams could muster.
Carson Soucy’s fifth goal of the season gave Duluth a short-lived 1-0 lead, but James Polk answered moments later to even up the score.
Jake Randolph put Omaha on the board in the shootout, and then Austin Ortega clinched it with his shootout goal.
The series will continue on Saturday in Duluth.
St. Cloud falls short in North Dakota
St. Cloud State’s attempt to come behind at North Dakota came up short Friday evening. North Dakota held off the speedy Huskies 3-2 in Grand Forks Friday.
UND took a 3-0 lead in the second period on Conner Gaarder’s fourth goal of the season.
St. Cloud didn’t go away though. The Huskies scored on a pair of power play goals from Ben Storm and Joey Benik.
Hot goaltending helps Huskies hang with Minnesota State
Jamie Phillips made 43 saves to help Michigan Tech escape Mankato with a 1-1 tie with Minnesota State.
After giving up a goal to Jean-Paul LaFontaine in the first period Phillips shut the Mavericks down the rest of the way.
Reid Sturos tied it up in the second period and it stayed that way.
Maverick goaltender Stephon Williams stopped 22 shots for the Mavericks.
Bitzer, Beavers quiet down Bulldogs
Mike Richter award nominee Mike Bitzer made 35 saves to lead Bemidji State to a 2-1 victory at Ferris State on Friday night.
Bitzer, who was one of four goaltenders in Minnesota nominated for the award, was outstanding in net again for the Beavers. He turned away shot after shot on the night.
Corey Ward and Phillip Brewer scored the Bemidji goals.
It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Beavers.
