Another day, another Rochester call-up.
Yesterday, Samuel Deduno was plucked from the Red Wings roster to help fill out the five-man pitching rotation.
Today, hot-hitting first-basemen/outfielder Chris Colabello has been summoned to the big club to replace Trevor Plouffe, who has put on the 7-day disabled list with concussion symptoms.
Colabello, 29, has had a solid start to 2013.
So far, he’s hitting .358 with 12 home runs and 39 RBIs. He also leads the International League in total bases (116), slugging percentage (.659).
Star Tribune writer Phil Miller reports that Colabello arrived in Atlanta this morning (with little sleep), and is hitting sixth in today’s lineup, playing right field.
Colabello, like fellow Red Wing pitcher Caleb Thielbar (called up this week), is also a product of the Independent Leagues. But Colabello knocked around in non-affiliate ball for eight seasons before given the chance to play in Double-A New Britain last year.
Earlier this season, he told TwinsDaily.com that the long wait may have been a blessing in disguise:
“For some reason it took eight years for someone to give me that chance, but in a lot of ways it was almost a blessing in disguise in terms of me being able to develop as player maturity-wise. It allowed me to be able to deal with failure, and deal with things that the game brings out. When you’re young, you don’t really know how to cope with things.
“I know there are a lot of people that would trade places with me, if the opportunity comes to do it in a Twins uniform, that would be unbelievable.”
