Christian Ponder will be back under center for the Minnesota Vikings when they meet the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday.
Head coach Leslie Frazier committed to Ponder during his press conference today at the team’s practice facility in Eden Prairie.
Frazier believes Ponder gives the Vikings the “best chance to win” and he’s “looking forward to him leading our team to victory.”
Ponder struggled in Minnesota’s 41-20 loss at Seattle last weekend. He finished the game completing only 13 of 22 passes for 129 yards, one touchdown and a pair of second half interceptions.
Frazier’s announcement that Ponder would start drew an immediate question about why Josh Freeman isn’t be given a chance to start.
“I just believe that at this point Christian gives us the best chance to win on Sunday,” Frazier said. “That fourth quarter (against Seattle) wasn’t what he would like or any of us would like, but this is where we are with the decision.”
Freeman has played in just one game since signing with the Vikings in early October.
Frazier added that “it hasn’t been a lot of fun” going into every week without knowing who the starting quarterback will be.
Ponder said he “appreciates the confidence Coach Frazier” is showing in him.
NOTE: Frazier said center John Sullivan has not passed concussion tests. His status for Sunday’s game is in doubt.
