Not only did Alex Boone reportedly refuse to take a pay cut before being released by the Vikings, he apparently was out of shape too, according to former Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway.
“I had heard through some players that I know that are there everyday that said he was not the Alex Boone of old,” said Greenway on KFAN radio on Friday. “Maybe a little bit out of shape and not prepared for the season, and I thought that was pretty interesting.”
The Vikings parted ways with Boone on Sept. 2 when their roster had to be trimmed had to be trimmed down to 53 players.
Greenway and Boone were teammates in 2016.
Although Boone is off the roster, Minnesota still has to pay him $3.4 million this season because of the four-year deal he signed in 2016.
“I am surprised they ate that much guaranteed money, but that tells me that something was clearly off with his game,” Greenway said.
Boone ended up signing with the Arizona Cardinals earlier this week.
After injuries and ineffectiveness plagued the offensive line last year, the Vikings will be rolling with a new look up front.
Joe Berger is the only starter who remains on the line from a year ago, but he’s at a new position.
Greenway played his entire career with the Vikings which spanned 11 seasons. He announced his retirement from the football in January.
