The Calder Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the league’s top rookie. Faber is up against “golden boy” prospect Connor Bedard and New Jersey Devils’ defenseman Luke Hughes.
Faber played in all 82 regular season games this season, he had the most average ice time (24:58) and total (2,047:58) amongst all rookies. He set the highest all-time mark by a rookie since the league began tracking in 1997-98.
The 45th overall selection in the 2020 NHL Draft has exceeded expectations, performing as one of the best players at his position this season, regardless of rookie status, but the Maple Grove, Minnesota native’s competition for the award is stiff.
Only 18 years old, Connor Bedard is one of the best prospects the league has ever seen, leading both rookies and the Blackhawks in goals (22), assists (39) and points (61) this season.
Luke Hughes’ 47 points marked the second-most by a rookie defenseman in Devils’ franchise history. He comes from a dominant hockey family, as his brothers Quinn and Jack are stars in the league.
The Professional Hockey Writers Association votes on the award, and the winner will be announced at the league’s annual award show scheduled for June 27 in Las Vegas.
