The Gopher women’s basketball team scored 40 points in the first half and shot 50 percent from the floor on the way to a 72-60 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers in a border battle game in Madison Sunday afternoon.
It was the Gophers’ 10th straight win and their third in Big Ten conference play, according to GopherSports.com.
Senior Shae Kelly scored a game-high 17 points, Carlie Wagner had 14 and Amanda Zahui B. scored 11 points and had 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season, GopherSports.com notes.
Minnesota scored quickly and often in the first half, at one point leading 29-14. The Badgers fought back to get within six, but the Gophers went into halftime with a 10-point lead.
In the second half, the Gophers stretched their lead to 20 with 6:47 left in the game, and kept the Badgers’ shooting percentage at less than 40 percent the entire game, to secure the win.
Head coach Marlene Stollings has gone 14-1 to begin her first season with the Minnesota, tying for the best start to a season by a first-year head coach. She’s the only first-year coach at Minnesota to post three straight wins to open Big Ten play.
