In the latest PECOTA standings from Baseball Prospectus, the Minnesota Twins are projected to win their third straight American League Championship.
The PECOTA system, which looks at players’ past performance in order to project how they’ll do in the upcoming season, has the Twins winning 90.6 games in 2021, which puts them ahead of the Cleveland Indians (85.7 wins) and Chicago White Sox (83.1 wins).
While the projections do project some success for the Twins, the eyes of most fans will be on the Twins’ historic 18-game losing streak in the postseason. While the projections do not state whether the Twins will snap their unfortunate record, it does show where they stack up in regard to some of the top teams in the American League.
At 90.6 wins, the Twins slot as the third-best team in the AL behind the New York Yankees (97.4 wins) and Houston Astros (93.0). That would be good news as the Yankees have been on the winning end of 13 of those games, but the Twins would face the Astros, who swept the Twins in a best-of-three wild card series last year.
Of course, the Twins would have to get to the postseason to make that happen. With a majority of the American League Central in a rebuild, the Twins should at least find their way to October, which will be half the battle in 2021.
