Niklas Backstrom was back on the ice with the Wild for the beginning of training camp Friday at Xcel Energy Center.
Backstrom underwent surgery on his elbow in the off-season, but at a date that wouldn’t allow the Wild to buy out the final year of his contract. The timing essentially forced the Wild to keep Backstrom on the team, so the question now is how will the goalie rotation be sorted out?
According to the Star Tribune, the answer is still be determined, but head coach Mike Yeo does not want Backstrom and backup goalie Darcy Kuemper sharing one net in practice while starter Devan Dubnyk works in the other.
Time will tell what happens. While you’re waiting, enjoy some professional hockey from Friday’s initial training camp practice.
