Minnesota Twins third baseman Miguel Sano will not head to ‘The Big Apple” with the team on Thursday. Instead he’ll be boarding a plane headed back to Minneapolis because of a sore back.
Sano left Monday’s game in the seventh inning because of lower-back tightness on the right side. He has been out of the lineup since, but MLB.com Twins blogger Rhett Bollinger reports that Sano’s condition has not improved.
“We’re hoping there’s nothing significant,” manager Paul Molitor told reporters before Thursday’s game in Detroit. “We’re going to get him checked out by our people and get him in a situation where we can get him some isolated treatment with our rehab trainers back there over the weekend and see if he responds and gets back to action when we get back for the homestand.”
There is no official word on when he might return.
Sano said he doesn't think all the extra work contributed to his back woes. Still hopeful of returning before season ends.

Sano is hitting .236 with 23 home runs and 60 RBIs in 106 games this season. He told reporters he first felt the pain 10 days ago and it’s gotten progressively worse.
According to the Star Tribune, it’s the first time Sano has been bothered by his back this season.
