Hassan Mead’s dreams of winning an Olympic medal in Rio came to a crashing halt when he tripped and fell on the final lap of the men’s 5,000 meters on Wednesday morning.
His only hope of advancing to the final was to win an appeal, which he did not, according to the Star Tribune’s Jim Souhan.
Mead, a Minneapolis South High School graduate, was among the leaders when he crashed to the track with just 200 meters to go. He got his feet tangled with other runners, including Great Britain’s Mo Farah, who won the race.
Mead’s final time was 13:34:27, ten seconds behind Farah. Overall, Mead’s time ranks 29th and only the top 15 advance to the final.
