Andrew Wiggins finally inked a multi-year contract extension on Wednesday.
The team press release did not state that terms of the deal, but it’s expected to be a five-year contract worth $148 million. That’s similar to the deal Joel Embiid recently inked, and both Embiid and Wiggins are from the same draft class.
Wiggins is entering his fourth season in the NBA and is coming off a career year where he averaged 23 points per game while shooting 45 percent from the floor.
The contract extension offer had been on the table for the past few months, but Wiggins fired his agent and it took a bit longer than expected for Wiggins to sign the deal.
Although he’s an elite scorer, Wiggins needs to improve on the defensive side. He was one of the worst players last season in terms of defensive real plus-minus.
Which is why owner Glen Taylor wanted a “commitment” from Wiggins before offering a max deal.
The Timberwolves open the regular season Oct. 18 against the San Antonio Spurs.
