The Minnesota Twins had some good news on Hall of Famer Rod Carew.
In a statement the team announced that Carew had a successful heart and kidney transplant surgery today at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The team says Carew is expected to make a full recovery.
“After a 13-hour procedure that started shortly after midnight Pacific time, Rod is resting in recovery,” said the Twins in a statement Friday afternoon.
Carew suffered a heart attack on Sept. 20, 2015. As a temporary solution he had a device implanted in his heart to help the heart keep running until he could find a suitable transplant heart.
Carew, 71, is a seven-time American League batting champion and first-ballot Hall of Famer. He hit .334 and played in 1,635 games in 12 seasons for the Twins, before finishing his career with the Angels.
Most recently, Carew partnered with the Twins on the “Heart of 29” campaign – an effort to raise funds for the American Heart Association.
