Minnesota highest rated basketball recruit for the Class of 2016 won’t play again this season.
MNBasketballHub.com reports that Hopkins junior forward Amir Coffey suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Tuesday night. According to KARE 11, Coffey landed wrong when he came down with a rebound.
Amir is the son of former Gopher standout Richard Coffey, who averaged about eight points and eight rebounds per game during his four-year career with the Gophers (1986-1990). Richard spent one year in the NBA with the Timberwolves (1990-91).
“The next six months will be tough for him,” Richard Coffey said to MNBasketballHub.com. “We’ve gotten a lot of calls wishing him well. The support Amir’s been receiving has been amazing.”
Coffey is a big-time recruit in the Class of 2016. ESPN’s Recruiting Nation ranks him as the 24th best player in that class, and lists him as a four-star recruit. Rivals also gave Coffey four stars and ranked him 44th in his class.
Coffey, as a sophomore last year, hit a 60-foot buzzer beater to lead Hopkins over Lakeville North in the State Tournament semifinals. Here’s the video replay.
