When it comes to American League starting catcher, the All-Star voters continue to do the right thing.
In updated numbers released Monday, Minnesota’s Joe Mauer is leading Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters by more than one million votes.
Mauer: 3,869,330.
Wieters: 2,677,959.
That just about wraps it up Mauer, who is on the verge of making his sixth All-Star roster.
Despite an 0-for-15 mini-slump against the Royals this past weekend, Mauer is still hitting .320 with eight homers, 24 doubles and 26 RBIs in 74 games.
If elected, Mauer would join Ivan Rodriguez (12 times) and Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk (seven) as the only AL catchers to earn four fan-elected starts, according to MLB.com.
He would also become one of three players in Twins history to accomplish the feat, joining Hall of Famers Rod Carew (nine times) and Kirby Puckett (six).
