Jake Odorizzi has been placed on the 10-day injured list because of a blister on his pitching hand, the Twins announced after losing 8-6 to the Oakland A’s Tuesday night.
The All-Star starting pitcher starting developing a blister near the tip of the middle finger on his pitching hand during the second inning. One inning later he served up a two-run homer to Matt Olson and wound up leaving the game after throwing 84 pitches in three innings.
“I think it’s the right thing to bump him and get him ready for post-All-Star break games,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “We think he’s going to be fine to make those starts after the break.”
Odorizzi was scheduled to start Sunday’s game against the Rangers so he wouldn’t have pitched in the All-Star Game anyway. Instead, Zack Littell will return to the Twins from Triple-A Rochester and start Sunday.
The Twins hit three homers in the loss to the A’s. Jason Castro hit two homers and Miguel Sano homered for the fourth time in his last four games. Sano has six homers in his past 10 games.
Game 2 of the three-game series in Oakland starts at 8:07 p.m. Wednesday. Kyle Gibson takes the mound for the Twins against A’s right-hander Mike Fiers.
