The Timberwolves pulled a surprise as they introduced 1st and 2nd round draft picks Jarrett Culver and Jaylen Nowell on Thursday morning by announcing that Naz Reid has signed a multi-year contract.
An undrafted free agent, Reid was initially brought in by the Wolves on a two-way contract, meaning he could only spend 45 days with the NBA team and the rest of the season in the G-League.
But after impressing for the Wolves during the NBA Summer League, in which the Wolves finished runners-up, the former LSU center will now be a part of the main roster.
“Naz Reid has come on the scene and like many of us in this program, has a chip on his shoulder, and he’s got something to prove,” said the Wolves president of basketball ops Gersson Rosas.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that Reid has signed a 4-year deal worth a max $6.1 million, with the first year guaranteed.
The 19-year-old averaged 11.9 points and 5.4 rebounds in 18.6 minutes in seven games at the Summer League in Vegas, which included a team-high 20 points in the semifinal win over Brooklyn.
The 6’10” center played 34 games for Louisiana State in 2018/19, averaging 13.6 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds in 27.2 minutes, and was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.
The terms of his contract have not been disclosed.
