The Gophers’ quarterback battle is now down to two after the much-hyped junior college transfer Vic Viramontes is reportedly leaving the University of Minnesota.
Multiple reports say Viramontes is transferring back to Riverside City College (RCC) in California – the same school he left to join the Gophers – and he’s switching positions from quarterback to linebacker.
Ryan Burns of Gophers Illustrated reports that being closer to his home in California played a role in Viramontes’ decision to leave.
Viramontes was the 2017 California Offensive Player of the Year after dominating at RCC, passing for 1,916 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushing for 1,248 yards and 26 more touchdowns.
Before signing with RCC, Viramontes had committed to Michigan, then California, so the big colleges certainly noticed him.
Minnesota’s quarterback competition is now down to redshirt freshman Tanner Morgan true freshman Zack Annexstad, both of whom started for the maroon and gold teams during the annual Gophers spring game.
Viramontes was third on the depth chart, so the hype surrounding him was already fading before his departure.
