It’s been 12 days since NFL free agency began and Adrian Peterson, who turns 32 years old today, is still without a team.
What’s the holdup? Fox Sports’ Shannon Sharpe thinks Peterson has priced himself out of the market: “He’s coming off a serious knee injury, and he wants $10-$12 million a year? I don’t see how he gets it.”
That’s a lot more money than the going rate for a top running back right now: $5 million annually, according to the Washington Post. That’s what the Vikings paid Latavius Murray.
The longer Peterson goes unsigned the more likely it is that his price tag will drop, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky writes, while adding that Green Bay is still a possible landing spot for Peterson.
But CBS Sorts says the fact that a team like the Raiders, who don’t have a No. 1 running back right now, are trying to lure Marshawn Lynch out of retirement over signing Peterson is a “major red flag.” Remember: Lynch is still under contract with the Seahawks so the Raiders would have to trade for Lynch or hope Seattle releases him.
According to NFL.com, there were 16 running backs available at the start of free agency and 10 of them have signed or agreed to terms. Peterson, Jamaal Charles, LeGarrette Blount, Christine Michael, Khiry Robinson and DeAngelo Williams remain unsigned.
On his 32nd birthday only one thing is certain: Peterson is still putting in the work needed to return to an elite level.
