By anyone’s standards, Rick Adelman and the Minnesota Timberwolves have had a nightmare season.
When asked if he’ll return next year, Adelman told the Pioneer Press Tuesday that “right now is not the time to talk about that.”
Instead, Adelman wants to focus on the medical condition of his wife, Mary Kay (she’s under medical care for seizures) and the team finishing strong.
Adelman, 66, has two years left on his contract, but is on record saying he would consider retiring if her health remained a concern.
Until he has to make that decision, he’d like to see his NBA team show the world that they’re getting better — despite all the injuries — and despite a dismal 27-46 record.
There are nine games left in the season, starting tonight in Milwaukee.
Two wins along the way will put Adelman in a select group of coaches with 1,000 victories.
Adelman says he hopes Mary Kay will feel good enough to be in attendance for that milestone win because “she deserves it.”
“I’ve never had a year like this — ever — off the court and on the court,” Adelman told USA TODAY Sports. “It’s like the longest year in the world.”
