Rookie right-handed pitcher Aaron Slegers will get another look in the Twins’ starting rotation.
Slegers will start on Wednesday when the Twins wrap up their series with the Tampa Bay Rays, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com.
He’ll look to build upon a strong MLB debut from Aug. 17 when he allowed just two hits, on two runs over 6.2 innings.
At 6-foot-10-inches tall, Slegers is a tall drink of water who’s had an impressive season in the minor leagues.
In 24 starts at Triple-A Rochester, Slegers is 15-4 with an ERA of 3.58 in 148.1 innings pitched.
He owns impeccable control too, having walked just 29 batters this season. Over his last two starts, Slegers has struck out 20 batters in 14.2 innings
Bollinger notes that the righty has a goal of reaching 180 innings this season and so far he’s pitched 154.2 innings this season. So there’s a possibility he may be shut down after he reaches that innings limit.
Slegers will take Dillion Gee’s spot in the rotation as Gee will move back to long relief in the bullpen.
Minnesota opens play on Monday 1.5 games up in the American League Wild Card picture.
If the Twins are able to sweep the Rays, Tampa’s playoff hopes will be all but buried as they’re currently four games back of the Twins.
