It wouldn’t take a rocket scientist figure out that Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots is considered the best head coach in the NFL.
That’s exactly where Belichick sits in NFL.com’s head coach power rankings. For the Vikings and coach Mike Zimmer, he’s got a long way to go before he reaches the top of the list, much less the top half of the list.
Zimmer came in at No. 24, ahead of only eight of his peers.
“One season might not provide enough evidence for us to gauge what kind of head coach a guy is. Yet, given how Zimmer made Minnesota competitive despite starting a rookie quarterback and playing without his best player, it’s impossible to not notice the job he’s doing. Tack on how he handled the Adrian Peterson situation this offseason and you have the makings of a solid organizational leader. The 2014 Bengals surely missed what he used to bring to their defensive coordinator post.”
Viking Update says the above analysis on Zimmer, touting his ability to lead an organization and make the Vikings competitive, means more than the low ranking.
Green Bay’s Mike McCarthy is ranked No. 4; John Fox, in his first year with the Chicago Bears, is ranked No. 9; Lions head coach Jim Caldwell is ranked 16th.
Minnesota reports to Mankato for training camp on July 25.
