Antoine Winfield may have retired, but in the NFL’s eyes, that has never been the case, since Winfield never made it official by filling out retirement papers with the league.
That is one of the things leaving the door open for Winfield to return to the league at a moments notice, and according to multiple sources, all that’s holding him back is finding the “right situation.”
When Winfield signed with the Seattle Seahawks, a team rich with secondary depth, it was always clear that it was in an attempt to win a Super Bowl, taking less money from Seattle in order to join a team that many outlets now rank No. 1 in the league in their weekly power rankings.
But Winfield’s time in Seattle was short, as he did not make the 53-man roster, and opted for retirement rather than a search for a new team.
Winfield has reportedly been keeping in shape in the Houston area, and with the Vikings massive injury concerns in the secondary, it would make sense from a purple perspective to sign the veteran corner.
General Manager Rick Spielman hasn’t ruled out the signing of Winfield, saying “you never know.”
Unfortunately for the Vikings, it takes two to tango, and an 0-3 team with quarterback, defense, and special teams trouble hardly sounds like the “right situation.”
