The Chicago White Sox earned their first three-game sweep over the Minnesota Twins since June of 2016 on Thursday with a 4-2 victory over Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Twins starter Michael Pineda started on a rough note as Tim Anderson homered on the first pitch to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead. Chicago extended its lead in the third when Jake Lamb hit his first home run of the season to give the White Sox a 2-0 advantage.
While Pineda settled down, the Twins lineup couldn’t provide him with any run support.
White Sox starter Lance Lynn labored with 111 pitches through five innings but held the Twins at bay with nine strikeouts. Although Trevor Larnach scored on a throwing error in the top of the fifth, a two-out rally left the bases loaded when Mitch Garver struck out looking.
Pineda ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning, allowing two runners to get on base before Hansel Robles came into the game. Andrew Vaughn singled on the first pitch from Robles to drive in a run and put Chicago ahead 3-1.
The Twins chipped into the lead in the top of the eighth when Max Kepler hit a solo home run to make it a 3-2 game but Yermin Mercedes delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to give Liam Hendriks the insurance to close out the 4-2 victory.
The Twins (12-23) will return to Target Field to start a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics on Friday.
